Fact: I’ve never read the last page of a book first.
Why would I? I know some of y’all do. I can’t do it. I want to experience the story as it unfolds. This is why I wouldn’t ask a fortuneteller anything. You think I want to know if the Colorado Rockies will ever win a World Series?
Heck no.
Part of the beauty of experiencing anything – even the agony of being a Rockies fan – happens to be the prospect of hope. Not its guarantee. Knowing that the Rockies won’t win it all until 3023 would ruin baseball for me forever.
I compile a monthly post called 6 Words on my blog. Ernest Hemingway inspired it when he said any story can be told in six words. I ask bloggers, friends, strangers, and a few strange blogger friends to respond to a prompt.

Because isn’t that what it’s all about? If I — and apparently so many others — can sum up what we want for our lives in 6 words, then the ultimate answer really is quite simple. Work toward that, and no fortune teller is necessary. I’d believe my heart over one of them any day anyways.
As for you, Eli, sucking at video games seems like fantastic future; that way, there’s so much more time for reading and writing and loving and laughing and cursing and eating ginger snaps at midnight. You know, the important things…

Beautifully done on the six words … and wonderful to have you along for the journey, Corey. There’s some magical balance in six words, and it’s not even a prime number, which I have a thing for.
When we can simplify a purpose that concisely, we write our own fortunes. The trick is getting ourselves to believe that fortune, as we would were it given to us by someone with the special powers to find it.
WE have those special powers, if we listen to them. Having a lifetime that never included seeing past the second screen of Pac-man and having my arse handed to me by my kids in Mario Kart has definitely freed up time for other pursuits.
Not the least of which is ginger snaps at midnight. That just might be the working title of my autobiography. The more reading and writing and cursing and loving and laughing you can get in a day, you feel like you’ve beaten all four ghosts and a thousand legions of Mario turtles anyway, right?
And words that leave an impact are the best way to start a morning, even if you haven’t had the ginger snaps the night before. Thanks for being part of it.

These fortunes are all so very beautiful and so hopeful… I hope that’s the right word. I just loved reading them. Also the one about the kids happily outliving us. YES. I think about that one a lot and I’m not even a parent. Is that weird? It’s like I have some irrational fear about parenthood and some serious trust in the order of the universe. I know.

Yeah, the video game thing — I feel ya. The only thing I cannot participate with the rest of the family.
