Our Fortunes, in 6 Words

spongebob stormtroopers fortune teller (2)

Fact: I’ve never read the last page of a book first.

6 words graphicWhy would I? I know some of y’all do. I can’t do it. I want to experience the story as it unfolds. This is why I wouldn’t ask a fortuneteller anything. You think I want to know if the Colorado Rockies will ever win a World Series?

Heck no.

Part of the beauty of experiencing anything – even the agony of being a Rockies fan – happens to be the prospect of hope. Not its guarantee. Knowing that the Rockies won’t win it all until 3023 would ruin baseball for me forever.

I compile a monthly post called 6 Words on my blog. Ernest Hemingway inspired it when he said any story can be told in six words. I ask bloggers, friends, strangers, and a few strange blogger friends to respond to a prompt.

Here’s the prompt for June:

If you asked someone to read your fortune, what’s the best thing they could say to you?

This question came from the website Q4KIDZ, which provides daily questions designed to spark imagination and conversation between you and your kids. Check them out.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Glad you think so, Tiff! We brought the sunshine and cheese spread this time, didn’t we? Happy Wednesday (on Saturday) to you. Where’d the week go?

      1. Kisma says:

Lol, it flew by for sure but truly I’m glad it did. I say sayonara to June! Today’s the start of a new month!

      2. Eli Pacheco says:

Well, we can’t do anything to stop it anyway, Tiff. I hate to toss a complete month away for some bad experience in it!

  2. There is so much hope here. Thank you. I love it!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Hope’s never in bad fashion, Annie. Thanks for taking a scoop or three with you. Love you being here!

  3. These are awesome! I hope they’re all accurate predictions, and they all come true.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Not a bad roundup, right Aeej? I’ll even accept my destiny.

  4. Piglove says:

So much fun!!! Thanks for inviting me pal! XOXO – Bacon

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Any time, my even-toed ungulate friend. Kermit showed up here last night lit as a Christmas tree with a switchblade and a couple of toad heavies, so just be sure to watch your back!

      1. Piglove says:

No he didn’t!? That mean green loser. He just doesn’t know when to stop. Snorts with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon

      2. Eli Pacheco says:

He most certainly did, Bake. He’s green with envy. All that fame.

  5. “Yes, you will be skinny again!!” LOL! Great post and answers! 😉

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Nice one, CW – I have a similar hope (and a pair of size 32 jeans to help manifest it!) Glad you enjoyed the collection!

      1. Here’s to the success for both of us!! 🍹🍸🍷🥂

      2. Eli Pacheco says:

        You forgot the donuts!

  6. San says:

Neat if we can make up our own fortunes 🙂

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Oh, but we can, can’t we?

  7. Rea says:

So fun to read! It’s also like getting into a small part of people’s minds. 😉

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Glad you enjoyed the ride, Rea! It’s Thinker’s Digest, really.

  8. mocadeaux says:

I love all of these positive, hopeful fortunes. The universal truth: we all yearn for happiness, good health and a life filled with love. Thanks for including me, Eli!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Not a downer in the lineup, Mo. Happiness, health, and love are definitely universal truths, whether we get them through a fine glass of wine, a handful of animal crackers, or a gaggle of bloggers rising to the challenge.

Great to have you as always, friend.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

They’re not half bad, and we’re just waiting on Center for Disease Control approval on them.

  9. Beth says:

I love so many of these, everything is so uplifting! I’m glad everyone has such a great look on the future. I can pretty much guarantee your fortune is already true for me. Video games are not my forte. Thank you so much for including me in this post!!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Not even one person tried, “You will always suck at everything,” Beth. It’s a pretty uplifting band, these. I could be fine at video games – it’s being able to beat a 2 year old I have a problem with.

Frees us up for bigger things, my friend. Thanks for joining us for the journey.

  10. Aw, what can I say but thank you always for having me and loved reading so many of the other fortunes above, as well!! 🙂

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

it’s wonderful to have an original like you in the mix, always, Janine.

  11. 15andmeowing says:

Great ones from everyone. Thanks for including me.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Not a sucky one in the batch, eh? Loved having you along, as always, Ellen.

  12. ksbeth says:

love these all and #6 is my favorite!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

I’m hoping to make it to 100 and they make it way beyond that, Beth!

  13. So much awesomeness here! Had to LOL at yours, Eli! Crap at video games, huh? 😀

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

It’s a good bucket full of awesome, isn’t it Kristi? I kept mine light (plus it left more of the universe a surprise to me.)

I’m awful at video games. The worst investment of a quarter since Beta tapes.

  14. 1jaded1 says:

Eli. These are so fun to read. Thank you for including me. May your unspoken fortunes come true (including the Rockies winning a World Series)! The cubbies did it so anything is possible. 🙂

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

LJ! Glad you like them. Always good to have you aboard. If the Rockies win the World Series, I’ll … well, pigs won’t fly and it won’t be a sign of the apocalypse, because the Cubs already did it.

I will be on the lookout for the four horsemen, however.

  15. Haha….no. 10 is too cute. May all these predictions come true. 😻

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Bake has had a thing for Miss Piggy for quite a while, and he and Kermit have come to blows over it, according to TMZ. His fortune would answer all his prayers.

  16. akaleistar says:

    Tamara’s answer made me laugh!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Tamara’s a pro at these, Ashley. Every answer she’s given has been a case of KitKat delivered to your doorstep with no invoice.

  17. A 6 word comment seems only appropriate: Such hope, in such few words.

Because isn’t that what it’s all about? If I — and apparently so many others — can sum up what we want for our lives in 6 words, then the ultimate answer really is quite simple. Work toward that, and no fortune teller is necessary. I’d believe my heart over one of them any day anyways.

As for you, Eli, sucking at video games seems like fantastic future; that way, there’s so much more time for reading and writing and loving and laughing and cursing and eating ginger snaps at midnight. You know, the important things…

Thank you for letting me be a part of this post, and for prompting me to remember what really matters most. Reading this was the perfect way to start my day this morning.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Beautifully done on the six words … and wonderful to have you along for the journey, Corey. There’s some magical balance in six words, and it’s not even a prime number, which I have a thing for.

When we can simplify a purpose that concisely, we write our own fortunes. The trick is getting ourselves to believe that fortune, as we would were it given to us by someone with the special powers to find it.

WE have those special powers, if we listen to them. Having a lifetime that never included seeing past the second screen of Pac-man and having my arse handed to me by my kids in Mario Kart has definitely freed up time for other pursuits.

Not the least of which is ginger snaps at midnight. That just might be the working title of my autobiography. The more reading and writing and cursing and loving and laughing you can get in a day, you feel like you’ve beaten all four ghosts and a thousand legions of Mario turtles anyway, right?

And words that leave an impact are the best way to start a morning, even if you haven’t had the ginger snaps the night before. Thanks for being part of it.

  18. i like twenty the best. but then i’m feeling like i’m failing at everything in my life right about now, so maybe it’s just that i need to hear that i’m good.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

We all need to hear that now and then, Jenn. And here’s a reminder: Well done, good and faithful servant.

The victory isn’t in a score or narrow goal; it’s in the ability to give each day our best, appreciate the blessings around us, and wake up the next day, ready to give our best again.

  19. TP Hogan says:

❤ Some of those were cute, clever and fun. others were surprisingly profound.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

It was a diverse compilation, wasn’t it, TP? You can find tons of profundity in six short words.

  20. I really love this! Such great inspiring words. My 6 words would have to be: Be very uncomfortable no matter what!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Glad you love it, Trish! I love compiling these lists and learning how we interpret the prompt, and putting it all together. Yours is a good one!

We grow from that discomfort – unless it’s caused by stepping on a LEGO. That’s different!

  21. Susan says:

Some truly great answers there. I’m particularly fond of (and didn’t write) “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Who doesn’t want to hear that?

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

A lot of good fortune going on, Susan. The ‘good and faithful servant’ one should write hymns. A fist-bump from the Creator isn’t a bad way to end your shift.

  22. Robert Cox says:

“Your Life total: ninety-three or ninety-seven.”
Just think how full of hope I’ll be at 23:59:59 on 10 April 2064. One second from my 94th birthday. –Robert

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

I like that approach, Robert! Here’s to being able to stay up til midnight when you’re 94. I hope to make it that far!

  23. AunieSauce says:

Haha, yours made me laugh. This was a fun one. Lots of people hoping for happiness and love! 🙂

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Thanks, Aunie. Did you notice, I think for the first time ever, we had two identical responses? Plus, happiness and love are always good fortune.

  24. Charlotte says:

These fortunes are all so very beautiful and so hopeful… I hope that’s the right word. I just loved reading them. Also the one about the kids happily outliving us. YES. I think about that one a lot and I’m not even a parent. Is that weird? It’s like I have some irrational fear about parenthood and some serious trust in the order of the universe. I know.

Who reads the last page of a book first?! HOLY SPOILER ALERT! Omg, no. NO. THAT TOTALLY RUINS EVERYTHING! Hope you have a wonderful long weekend, Eli!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

That’s a perfect word, Charlotte! I get to be the only person who sees the entries as they come in.

Yes on the kids! And I hope that my girls are always close friends, as they are now. It’s my one serious request.

It’s not weird at all. Children should always happily outlive us. The universe is a scary thing to trust, but we haven’t much of a choice, I’m afraid.

Some people do read the last page first! That’s worse than throwing away graham crackers. Enjoy your long weekend, my friend. Love seeing you here as always.

  25. Rorybore says:

Yeah, the video game thing — I feel ya. The only thing I cannot participate with the rest of the family. Because I like laughing WITH people — not having them laugh at me because I cannot get Captain America to jump up the damn wall. Like how did they even know he was supposed to go up the wall in the first place??!!
Love seeing all our heart’s desires spoken here. I think in the end it’s enough to say that we simply LIVED, eh?
(sorry it was Canada day and my Canadianese is still on – hee)

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

We just don’t possess the talent, Rore. Let them all level up. We’ll eat the cookies. I figured if anyone knew how to get Captain America to jump up the damn wall, it would be you.

The kids know all the cheats and secrets.

There’s a ton of heart’s desires in here, but did anyone give proper love to pizza? Even in Canada.

  26. Oops, I read this originally from my phone where it’s a pain to comment and I’m just now realizing that I never commented. I enjoyed the positive outlook on life shared by everyone. Thanks for including me, Eli!

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

I’ll never close the door on you, Deb. The band really brought it this time, didn’t they? And not a single one mentioned bankruptcy or loss of limb.

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

If you had to pick a favorite … which one?

  27. Louise says:

I read through these last week while in transit and wanted to wait until I had time to reply – I loved this – so motivating. I think I was in a bit of a funk when I submitted mine 🙂 Nothing a staycation week doesn’t fix though. Thanks for including me in this wonderful company and collection of good wishes.

  28. Loved this!! Great answers. I’m sorry I’m late to read it…

    1. Eli Pacheco says:

Glad you liked it, Lisa. Not a bad collection, eh? I’m glad to have you along.
