All you need to know about one of my most revered coach heroes is that he was known as “Bum.”

I draw on others, too. Mike Shanahan, the former Broncos coach. I look to legendary John Wooden and inspirational Jim Valvano, in college basketball. When I need to be a tactician, a teacher or a motivator, you can’t beat them.

They have an abundance of championships to prove it.

Bum Phillips, though, never won a Super Bowl. Hell, he never even got to one. But any coach who’s been on the hot seat or a lame duck or any such sticky situation must channel his inner Bum now and then. Especially for the beautifully awkward.

I’ll tell you about it tomorrow. It involves a lame-duck soccer coach and a pivotal out-of-town tournament. For U11 girls. Small kids, big problems.

Awkward is the easy part.

It’s the beautiful I have a problem with.

This Beautifully Awkward Project isn’t easy. I have a great list of ideas from you all, from yoga class to community service to block parties. I will choose another for the next of three installments on this endeavor I’ve taken on with fellow blogger Melissa Bond.

How Can You Help Me Become Beautifully Awkward?

I need you to help me get outside of my comfort zone.

Like many of us, I gravitate toward the easy. I’ll talk with people like me. If there aren’t any around, I’ll keep to myself. With my laptop. Or a cookie. Often, both. It’s easy to strike up conversations with parents or someone in a Charlotte 49ers jersey.
